The WDT (Weiss Distribution Tool) is designed to improve espresso extraction by breaking up any clumps in the grind while it’s dry, before tamping. It’s named after John Weiss, who developed the technique in 2005 to offset the poor grind quality obtained using entry-level grinders.
It’s now also being used for filter coffees. Pricking the grind during pre-infusion will help to reduce channelling.
